Six Crystal-Clear Window Film Facts

We want to educate people about window film. Therefore, we want to share an excerpt from an excellent article from The Denver Post. This piece discusses how window films can be used to save you money on the utility bill. There are six facts about window films that we’d like to highlight for you.

Here’s a quick summary of the Six Crystal-Clear Window facts:

1. Color-Neutral Options – According to International Window Film Association’s Darell Smith, “If you don’t want to change the color of your home’s natural light or see any metallic shine, ask for a color-neutral day-lighting film”. The film will preserve the window light intensity while saving energy costs for the client.

2. Lower Bills – Solar-control films can block up to 80 percent of the solar energy coming through windows. When the weather is hot, solar- control films cut down on air conditioning. The savings are substantial. Smith says, “It usually translates into a year-round savings of about 5 to 10 percent of the home’s total energy bill”. These savings add up especially during hot months.

3. Damage Shield – Visible light lies on the spectrum between ultraviolet. The light damages furniture especially infrared light that beams heat. Treated windows block 99 % of UVA and UVB rays, a shield that greatly slows the deterioration and fading of drapes, carpet and furniture.

4. Decorative Looks – Modern window films can make clear glass look etched or frosted for less money. The design feature works for privacy or a decorative effect.

5. It’s Not a Fix – A window in bad shape, one that is leaking or poorly insulated won’t be fixed with a window film installation. The best action is to replace deteriorating windows. “However, if your windows are in good shape, don’t replace them just for energy efficiency”, suggested Smith. He recommended to try film first.

6. Get a Warranty on the Work – Make sure to read the warranty before you sign a contract. A warranty should protect you against bad installations. Signs of a bad job include film that peels or lifts at the edges, or little bubbles growing under the film. Be aware that many window manufacturers will invalidate their warranty if you change anything about the windows, including adding window film. Contact your window manufacturer and get in writing any restrictions on your warranty.  Specifically, you can find out how adding film will affect warranty coverage.
